Introduction

Cultural, social and economic aspect of each country is formed as a result of a number of secular processes. The societies of the majority of European counties – including Poland – have been formed as a result of clashing and mixing of influences of different nations, traditions and religions. As a result of such a process the very differentiated and due to that very interesting society of the Republic of Both Nations (Polish and Lithuanian) arose followed by the Second Republic. Today alike, although in smaller scale, Polish wealth constitutes the mosaic of cultures, which – from the other hand – is threaten by marginalization in the era of common globalization. Because of these actions, which cultivate differentiated heritage of our ancestors from one hand, and at the same time directed towards finding identity and place of people coming from different traditions in contemporary world are so important. One of those traditions, cultivating of which we want to devote activities and events planned in June 2008 is evangelical tradition. It is enough interesting that possesses, from one hand, domestic roots (Polish families accepting Luther's and Calvin's lessons from the times of Reformation) as well as a result of settlement in our country (in different periods) Protestants from Germany, Czech, the Netherlands, Scandinavian countries, Finland, Scotland, Baltic states and - in last period – also from Korea and many other countries. All they in lesser or greater degree have influenced polish culture, art and economy. All of those influences we would like to bring nearer to a broader scope of receivers. We want at the same time remind and present using examples that evangelicism was - in general reception – identified with hard work and conscientiousness (famous evangelical work ethos) as well as with patriotism, the proof of which constitute numerous representatives of evangelical community struggling on different battle-fields in the course of the history of Poland and dying for their homeland.

An occasion to organize a celebration which commemorate the presence of Lutherans on polish territory is falling in June 2008 the anniversary of laying the cornerstone (with an approval of the King Stanislaus Augustus) underneath one of most beautiful temple in Warsaw – the Holy Trinity church, located on Małachowski Place, in the geometric centre of the city. At the same time it will be the 50-th Anniversary of its consecration after the post war restoration. Our celebration constitute at the same time part of the European Year of Intercultural Dialogue 2008, declared by the European Committee. The program of celebrations is very rich and diversified. The purpose, as was set forth by organizing body, is to show both historical as well as contemporary signs and results of functioning the Lutheran community in Warsaw.
